The Listener: Kutiman in Jerusalem, Part 2
At the beginning of May, we gave you a tiny peek into Kutiman's project. Armed with nothing but a camera, a boyish grin, and buddy Emanuel Wizthum, Kuti filmed musician Lazer Lloyd with his guitar against a concrete backdrop and the sun-drenched landscape of Jerusalem.
Since then, Kutiman has returned again and again to the city, meeting local musicians in their homes and in the city's winding streets, listening and filming. Unlike previous projects that reflected his signature YouTube mashup style, this work draws upon different sources of inspiration; he's no longer dropping in on anonymous artists' through the internet (as he famously did in his renowned work, ThruYou), but rather exploring the city's cultural life in person and from within.
It is from this point, from deep within the life blood of Jerusalem's music scene, that an original mix, sample, sophisticated audio demo—whatever you wanna call it—will emerge. Jerusalem will hear herself as she has never heard herself before.
But meanwhile, here's another teaser: this part of the journey documents meetings with local artists like Laub, Safi Suede and Hani Asad that happened in the last few days/weeks. And don't worry—you'll be the first to know when the final product goes live on June 16.
